About Us

Medina Publishing Ltd (MPL) is a young independent publishing company with a broad range of titles for children and adults. Our mission is to educate and entertain, to foster cultural understanding (particularly between the West and the Islamic world) and to encourage respect for our planet and all its inhabitants.

From its foundation in 2009, MPL has established a reputation for high quality books on the Arabian peninsula and Islamic affairs, from academic works to illustrated children’s books and, most significantly, the Arabian horse. More recently, it has branched out into such diverse areas as biography and memoirs, cli-fi and YA, photography and politics, and – under its imprint Barzipan – romance and humour. Through its sister company, Synthetic Press based in Berlin, most titles are simultaneously produced as e-books and many have their own websites.

MPL’s directors have strong links in the UK and the Middle East and a lifetime of experience in publishing and the Arab world.

Introducing the Medina Publishing personnel:

Peter Harrigan FRGSPeter Harrigan FRGS (founding Director): Although born and bred on the Isle of Wight, Peter has spent much of his adult life abroad – first in Africa, then in the Arabian Gulf. Based in Saudi Arabia for most of those 30 years, his contribution – through writing, commissioning and publishing – to promoting Saudi-British relations, was recognised in 2013 when he was awarded the Rawabi Holding Award. Having commissioned the highly-regarded titles Wings Over Arabia and The Caravan Goes On: How Aramco and Saudi Arabia Grew Up Together, he is once again deeply involved in Saudi affairs in masterminding two significant books for the Arriyadh Development Authority: one on the city itself and the other focusing on the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Diriyyah. Peter is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Visiting Researcher to the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, Exeter University and an Associate of Al Khamsa Arabian horse society in the USA. A keen yachtsman, Peter maintains his interest and involvement in the maritime life as well as the arts and politics of the Isle of Wight.
Kitty Carruthers (founding Director)Kitty Carruthers (founding Director): With 35 years’ experience in the publishing industry (and clients ranging from royalty and governments to first-time authors), Kitty oversees the operation of the Surbiton offices. Sporting mad, the company’s many equestrian-related titles are a particular satisfaction to her. She is a life member of the International Society of Olympic Historians, associate editor of its Journal, and author of British Olympic Heroes. Although in her 60s, Kitty has too much fun publishing exciting books with the talented and tight-knit team around her to retire yet. When not producing books or watching tennis, she plays the guitar and croquet.
Jonathan Edwards, MBE, MScJonathan Edwards, MBE, MSc (Finance Director): Jonathan retired from the British Army in 1997 with the rank of Major and a gong for outstanding administration and for keeping the tanks rolling in the First Gulf War. His experience of the Arab world (both in battle and in business) and his flair for organisation, administration and logistics make him an invaluable part of the team. He successfully juggles his job as Bursar of a large secondary school in the East End of London with keeping the Medina finances in order. An ex-chorister and talented musician, he spends his spare time making music with his wife Kitty, walking the dogs and building sheds. He likes to be mistaken for his more famous namesake, but doesn’t jump as far.
Jessica Horner (Operations Manager): Jessica bravely knocked on MPL’s door one day and was invited to join Medina Publishing as an intern in 2014. As a fellow musician and dog lover, she quickly became part of the family. Her talents lie in proofreading and copy editing, but she has all-round administrative savvy. Having completed the SfEP’s training courses with flying colours and working freelance as a ghostwriter and proofreader, her skills continue to grow and she adores her work. With an organized mind and experience in admin and finance, she is undaunted by her new role as Operations Manager and looks forward to a long and bright future in the publishing world.
Krissi Hill, Marketing ExecutiveKristina Hill (Marketing Executive): Won over by the irresistible charms of office dogs, Loopy and Solo, Krissi joined us in February 2016. After graduating from the University of Exeter with a degree in English Literature she has completed work experience at a number of publishers, loves all things literary and can’t wait to get stuck into the world of books. As Press Officer, Krissi is our voice on Twitter, bringing you all our exciting news. She brings with her a love of art and children’s literature as well as some creative ideas for MPL’s marketing and publicity campaigns – watch out for our name on the bestseller lists soon!
Roger HarrisonRoger Harrison (non-executive Director): Roger was introduced to writing quite by accident, a car accident actually. He discovered that prolixity could pay and wrote a series of features for the Arab News which, hoping that in the volume of his output there might be a glistening nugget, employed him. 15 years, 2,500 articles and over a million words later, he has finally left the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia although returns frequently. Part of his press experience saw him accompany HRH Sultan bin Salman and HRH Bandar Bin Khaled Al Faisal on a gliding expedition around Saudi Arabia and followed it up with a book on the expedition. He thanks God that he is married to a very tolerant wife, has one son and several stray cats and now lives in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE. Here he has produced several more books (for corporate clients: a company history and a review of Islamic Architecture) and developed, scripted and voiced many short films and advertisements, from Red Bull to Rolls Royce.
