Rare photographs support an account of Oman as it was in 1965, prior to the days of HM Sultan Qaboos. In the time before unification, when the country was known as Muscat and Oman, these photos portray traditional life as it once was.
John C. Wilkinson, D.Litt., is a former Reader at Oxford University and an Emeritus Fellow of St. Hugh’s College, Oxford, where he taught from 1969 until his retirement in 1997.
He worked several years with international oil companies in the Middle East before returning to Oxford to write his doctoral thesis on the Ibadhi Imamate of Oman.
He is author of numerous articles and several books, notably: Water and Tribal Settlement in South-East Arabia , The Imamate Tradition of Oman, Arabia's Frontiers and Ibâdism: Origins and early development in Oman.
